Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at ermowingplano@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We are well accustomed to North Texas warm grasses of Zoysia, St. Augustine and Bermuda

Heights

  • We do not SCALP
  • Our mowers are Toro.
  • We start the year and end the season on Setting 3, which is 2.5 inches
  • As summer hits August we move the mower blade up to 4 or 4.5, which is  2 3/4 up to 3.5 inches
  • As season temps lower in fall we return to our original setting
  • **** each yard is different so these are guidelines. We follow the Texas A&M  Agriculture Extension recommendations for North Texas

Recommended mowing heights by grass type

  • Common Bermuda grass: 1 to 2 inches
  • St. Augustine grass: 2.5 to 3.5 inches
  • Zoysia grass: 1 to 2.5 inches
  • Fescue: 3 to 4 inches

General mowing guidelines

  • The one-third rule: Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at one time. For example, if you are mowing at a 2-inch height, mow again when the grass reaches 3 inches.
  • Frequency: Mowing frequency will change based on the season, rainfall, and temperature. You will need to mow more frequently during the peak growing season.
  • Seasonal adjustment: For St. Augustine grass, start mowing in March and mow every other week. In April, you can start mowing weekly as needed.
  • Shady lawns: If you have shady areas, a slightly higher mowing height is recommended.
  • First mow: For zoysia, mow low for the first mow of the season.
  • Avoid mowing wet grass: Do not mow wet grass, as it can spread disease and clog your mower.  After rains, we will assess, text and notify if we need to move the mowing date to ensure the health of your lawn and not create wheel ruts.
  • ***  During peak periods of growth for warm-season grasses (summer), more frequent mowing—sometimes two times per week—may be required to prevent turfgrass scalping.
  • We offer weekly and biweekly but as homeowners we know that we mow 2x a week during growing season to keep up the health of lawn

We follow the “Don’t Bag It” lawn care approach, which promotes a healthier lawn through mulching.

Benefits of Mulching:

  • Saves time and money – Mulching is faster and more cost-effective than bagging.
  • Nourishes the soil – Grass clippings provide essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
  • Retains moisture – Helps the soil stay hydrated, especially during droughts.
  • Reduces thatch buildup – Prevents excessive thatch, which can harm your lawn.
  • Minimizes disease spread – Bagging is only recommended if your lawn is diseased to prevent contamination.

Prices vary based on total size of lawn, for example; A 10,000 sq. ft. lawn will be $145 for the Standard Package and $175 for the Preferred Package.

We prefer Liquid as it waters in and provides the most consistent coverage as well as effectiveness.  Michigan St and Texas A&M have done studies.  They have made it clear they don't say one is better than the other as it depends on each reason, area, and preferences.
